Grounding Through Mask Making

Derbyshire Mind have 4 new workshops being added to the Mindful Arts programme, hosted by Salyx , studying at Derby University

This series of workshops are centered on working with the senses through mask making. By familiarising ourselves with how our senses experience the world around us, we can achieve grounding effects, which can support our mental health. Grounding is a versatile and valuable technique, which can be used in pretty much any situation. In each workshop we’ll be exploring 4 of our senses, which are: Seeing, Hearing, Feeling, Smelling. All will be about mask making and how each sense can be used in tandem with creativity.

Meet Salyx the facilitator for - Grounding Through Mask Making

Hello, I am Sal,

I’m a student at the University of Derby, and I love the arts. I always enjoy exploring and finding new and interesting ways to express myself. One of my favourite creative endeavours is mask making! Even though with age I have been allowed to make bigger and better masks out of more fancy materials, I did not start off that way. Cardboard and tape was all I had at my disposal as a kid, and Mr Maker’s inspiring wisdom. My life taught me that creativity is a strong supporter, even when you have nothing, you can still make something. It’s this belief in creativity as a powerful force of nature that inspired me to apply for my course at university!

How does Creative and Expressive Art help with our wellbeing?

Creative and expressive art can boost our well-being by offering a unique outlet for processing emotions, enhancing self-awareness, and even improving mental health.

Art allows individuals to express emotions they may find difficult to put into words, like frustration, sadness, or joy. Painting, drawing, and other art forms can serve as emotional outlets, providing relief from stress.

Mindfulness through art shifts focus away from daily worries and helps create a calming effect, improving mental clarity and reducing rumination on negative thoughts.
